PRESENTATION

CABARET-ROCHER TRIO is a group born from the collaboration between Etienne Cabaret and Christophe Rocher, two leading multi-instrumentalists in Brittany who have known each other for many years. In 2018, they had the idea (and the desire) to create a hybrid repertoire, fusing traditional Breton music with modern, free-form jazz, tinged with imaginary sonic textures that only improvisation can reveal.

After numerous concerts on tour as a duo (in France, China, India…) and two recorded albums, the musicians were joined by the prodigious Breton drummer Nicolas Pointard (Kami Octet, Moger, Ensemble Nautilis) to form a trio whose free and hybrid music navigates between dance tunes and melancholic ballads, between Breton, Balkan, and free jazz sounds.

  • Étienne CABARET

    Largement connu pour ses faits de « treujeun gaol » (clarinette traditionnelle bretonne) développe à la clarinette basse un son électro-acoustique qui flirte avec le jazz, le rock ou la musique improvisée. Il a créé la Compagnie des Musiques Têtues et joue avec Moger, Arn, Gosseyn, Dièse3, … et fait ainsi circuler sa pratique musicale entre une multitude de genres, aux abords des musiques du monde et des traditions mais toujours avec une approche moderne et décomplexée.

  • Christophe ROCHER

    Créateur et directeur artistique de l’Ensemble Nautilis, il défend une certaine idée de l’improvisation, libre, décloisonnée, généreuse. Le clarinettiste joue depuis 25 ans avec les plus grands improvisateurs, Bernard Lubat, Hamid Drake, Rob Mazurek, Steve Coleman et crée sa propre musique au sein de l’Ensemble Nautilis. Il est aujourd’hui à la tête d’un programme d’échanges internationaux entre Brest et Montréal, mais aussi d’une série de projets qui mêlent arts et science, démarche évocatrice de cette idée que la musique n’a pas de frontières.

Nicolas POINTARD

He began playing the instrument at the age of 9 and turned to jazz and improvised music at the end of the last century, studying with Césarius Alvim, Steve Mc Craven Guillaume Orti, Benoît Delbecq, Carlos Zingaro, Fabrizio Cassol… With the groups Oko, Shampoing, Art ensemble of Brest or Rah-slup, he developed a drumming style blending timbral exploration and polyrhythmic combinations; an approach he also applies to other genres (pop, rock, Breton music, electronic…) with the groups Moger, Faro, Naab or Faustine, or to other disciplines (theater, dance, silent film) with the show Dékoeff, the Hiatus company, and the For trink quartet…
A highly sought-after musician in Brittany, he also participates in other interregional and international ensembles (Moger Orchestra, Kami octet, Ensemble Nautilis…).

À l’occasion de la sortie de l’album La marche des lucioles, les musiciens ont souhaité associer d’autres artistes issus de divers horizons (photo, vidéo, écrit…) afin d’établir des ponts artistiques entre chacun des onze morceaux de l’album et d’autres oeuvres qui s’en inspirent – voire qui ont pu inspirer leur composition.
