SAXOPHONE SUZY – EN
SAXOPHONE SUZY
The goal of this educational workshop is to offer a collaborative project through which teachers and music students (from conservatories or other schools) can come together and perform as part of a film concert featuring a restored copy of a 1928 Franco-German silent film by Karel Lamač, starring Anny Ondra and Hans Albers.

Educational project :
- To facilitate artistic collaboration between teachers and students from different disciplines around a shared project.
- To involve the composition class in working with the artistic director on composition and arrangements.
- To blend different musical styles—classical, jazz, and improvised music—in pieces with varying characteristics, tailored to the film’s scenes.
- For student musicians in instrument classes: working from sheet music, ensemble playing, guided improvisation, and developing musical intent in relation to the visuals.
- For student musicians in the jazz and improvisation classes: rhythmic ensemble work, collective improvisation, and exploring musical intent in relation to the visuals.
- Ultimately, the film concert will be performed by an orchestra bringing together professional musicians from Nautilis, teachers, and students, for a one-hour-and-twenty-minute performance.
- The second part of the film lends itself to collaboration with a dance class, which could use the film’s dance sequences to develop a stage design that conveys the sense that the story is also unfolding on stage. This would involve exploring parallels between our two eras through contemporary creative dance, in conjunction with music that also embraces a deliberate anachronism in relation to the visuals.
